Arts Thread was pleased to announced their new collaboration with New Designers to further help the creative graduates. Originally created as a magazine, founders Alex Brownless and Katie Dominy introduced the new website and explained its functions. A great website packed with useful features and ideas that will help the new graduates to either look for a job or a work placement, such as careers advice, interview tips, as well as competitions and a lot more. The unique thing about Arts Thread is that it is the only website solely for graduates. Graduates can create their portfolios for employers to see.
Postgraduate students from the Royal College of Art showcased some of their latest work as part of the event. Fah Chakshuvej, an MA Fashion student, displayed her sketchbook and a selection of her fabric swatches. Specialising in menswear, her latest work is inspired by the beauty of ageing. Images of hunched old people are clearly translated to the awkwardness of the detailing in her designs, which reminds me of Rei Kawakubo’s (Comme des Garcons) SS 1997 collection entitled ‘Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body.’ Using doilies, Fah creates her own textiles for the collection. The whimsical pattern of the doilies, juxtaposes with the harshness of the bulbous detailing. She is definitely one to watch.
